I have a student who is taking courses using McGraw Hill Connect. He says he is able to navigate quizzes just fine; however, he is indicating he is not able to do the Learn Smart assignments at all. Has anyone dealt with McGraw Hill Connect and JAWS before? Are there any solutions or workarounds? Is the publisher cooperative/helpful?

I am looking for ideas, suggestions and solutions for making maps accessible online.

Context:

The instructor is teaching a fully online geography class. He has map quizzes in each module. The student must look at a state map with no identifying information except the outlines of all of the counties and identify the highlighted county. I've got it nailed down on color contrast/texture for the highlighted counties, but what about making this assessment accessible to a student who is blind?

There is not a student in need at the moment, I'm just curious to see what others have done or what your ideas or suggestions would be for this type of assessment.

The State of Minnesota has put together an excellent resource on map accessibility.  It was a joint effort between their Office of Accessibility and their Geospatial Information Office. I'm not sure if there's anything there that would help for this assignment as it seems to be an exercise in recognizing shapes and positions.  To find a suitable alternative for a non-sighted person you should discuss the goal of this with the instructor.

Depends on exactly what you need.  Zoom is pretty accessible, as far as using a screen reader is concerned.  It's primarily for conferencing, but it incorporates live chatting features via the keyboard.

Keep in mind also that many laptops assign the function keys to specific actions. Pressing F7 may be a browser related command on that laptop which causes your default browser to launch. If you add the FN key to the command, you may get different results.

In JAWS, you will need to turn on Quick Keys with JAWS-KEY+Z in order to use the navigation key commands such as H, T, and K. In NVDAA, you will need to turn on Brose Mode with NVDA-KEY+SPACEBAR.

Sometimes the single key, quick keys only work if you are in a Say All or reading mode for the entire document, not when you are able to edit. For example, JAWS has the same quick Keys for Headings but they are only usable if you are in SayAll...reading the entire document.

Also, keep in mind that sometimes keyboard commands don't work because there is a bug although using Insert + F7 has not brought up Google stuff on my computer. Is this perhaps a keyboard command the user or IT has set to do that which conflicts with the NVDA command?

Just a follow up:

We hit certain walls that even though a YouTube video and other documentation tells us we are doing things correctly, we can't get it to work the way it is documented. For example, with NVDA, you can use the quick heading key of H to navigate headings. In a Word document, neither myself nor my colleague can get this to work. It just types out H. And, if I initiate the NVDA elements list (Insert F7) while in a Word document, it opens google instead.

Joe:  This is because NVDA is in "Forms/interaction Mode" and is passing through the keystrokes to the Microsoft Word Application so it types h.
(The main function of a Word document is kind of a giant text area field).
If you exit NVDA's forms mode using NVDA Key (usually INSERT) + SPACEBAR (low pitch noise means you have switched into "virtual reading mode", High pitch noise means "Forms mode"). Once you are in "reading mode" the H key and INSERT+F7 commands will work again.

To provide a high level answer, screen readers have different controls for web browsers versus other desktop software so all commands might not be cross compatible.  The available screen reader functions will also depend on which mode the screen reader is in "virtual reading mode" versus "interaction/forms" mode.

Subject: [Athen] JAWS and NVDA training help

Our college tests all software that is requesting to be renewed or purchased.  Our department is responsible for this task. Even though we have the basic skills using both JAWS and NVDA, we want to improve our skill set.  We are both sighted users of these two products.

We are seeking anyone who is willing to do training for us. Both basic and advanced training. This can be remote training using Zoom video conferencing, in person, using email or phone calls.

We hit certain walls that even though a YouTube video and other documentation tells us we are doing things correctly, we can't get it to work the way it is documented. For example, with NVDA, you can use the quick heading key of H to navigate headings. In a Word document, neither myself nor my colleague can get this to work. It just types out H. And, if I initiate the NVDA elements list (Insert F7) while in a Word document, it opens google instead.

We have Windows 10 and use the latest versions of NVDA and JAWS 2019.

Any help will be much appreciated.
