Hello Leigh,
If the MathJax server is local, the webmaster can configure MathJax.Hub.Config() to set the input and output of the math. For more details, please refer to this link: https://docs.mathjax.org/en/v1.0/configuration.html#configuration-options-by-component.
If it’s a CDN, you can configure the math directly in the HTML header. You can verify the output of MathJax through the browser console. The details for verifying output can be found in the link.
Best regards,
Joshua Hori

Hi Joshua,
Thanks for that tip about manually adjusting the Mathjax settings. I ran into that problem just last week for the first time (or it was the first time I had actually noticed it). Previously in my testing, NVDA with MathCat had just read out the equations by default. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether requiring the screen reader user to (somehow) know to adjust the Mathjax settings to get the equations to read properly is itself a WCAG violation?
Thanks!

Hello Geraldine,
Mathjax displays as SVG by default in browsers, which is inaccessible. Right click (Shift+F10) on the equation, then alter the mathjax settings: Math Setttings -> Math Renderer -> MathML
HTML+CSS also works. CHTML is a new one I’ve seen used which places math in a table, but it plays very nicely with screenreaders.
Best,
Joshua Hori

You don't often get email from susan.kelmer at colorado.edu<mailto:susan.kelmer at colorado.edu>. Learn why this is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>
What format is the exam in? Does it have equations entered properly, i.e. in MathType? For math, there needs to be further remediation of documents to make the math readable.

[External email - use caution]
I’m working with a legally blind student who needs to take a Calculus exam. We typically use NVDA for our visually impaired students. When I tested the exam yesterday, NVDA read all the text but stopped when it reached the math equations. How can I get NVDA to read the math problems? I’ve already tried the MathCAT and Access8Math extensions, but it still isn’t reading the equations. Am I missing a step? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
