Undergraduate Research Assistant for hummingbird flight project
I am David Cuban, a PhD student in the Biology department in the Behavioral Ecophysics Lab (Prof. Alejandro Rico-Guevara). I study the convergent evolution of nectar-feeding birds through the lenses of biomechanics, morphology, and ecology. I am seeking an undergraduate research assistant to determine the wing, tail, and body motion of hummingbirds from recorded high-speed videos of them flying in a wind tunnel
Analysis of High-speed videos of sunbird feeding
We are studying the flight kinematics (motion) of hummingbirds flying a different speeds in a wind tunnel. High speed videos have been collected from birds flying in our wind tunnel at our research station in Colombia. Multiple species and sexes of birds are included in this study. This is the first time that any South American hummingbird species have been studied in wind tunnel flight experiments!
Necessary requirements:
• Self-motivation for completing tasks in a timely manner
• Consistency and attention to detail
Preferred requirements:
• Familiarity with video analysis (or willingness to learn)
This project will be using the software package dltdv8a and custom MATLAB scripts to help process video data. Familiarity with either of these packages could be useful but not necessary as we will train you to get started.
