Honors American South: Foundations of Black Culture, Social Movements, and Collective Liberation will travel through ten states--from Houston, TX to Washington, DC! In addition to visiting historical sites and memorials to significant moments in American history, students will meet with foot soldiers from the civil rights movement and community leaders who are continuing to push forward conversations about racial justice and reconciliation.
A unique collaboration between community organization Sankofa Impact<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/sankofaimpact.org/__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!mAdw8q-wF-PnCSUYuHISC98NYDb4FBjUHrD4VyCyER9GMTRvi1jYGt8ujtaj8zQrzgJ43lmetI_DlA$>, UAA Dean Ed Taylor, and the CELE Center, we will explore the eras of enslavement, racial terrorism, civil rights, mass incarceration, and abolition activism today by visiting centers of Black history, joy, and resilience, as we craft a vision of collective liberation and engage in our own leadership practice.
The program is designed to meet several general education requirements for any UW undergraduate (Social Sciences, Diversity) and will fill requirements for a major in American Ethnic Studies<https://aes.washington.edu/undergraduate-programs> or a minor in Leadership<https://cele.uw.edu/students/opportunities/minor-in-leadership/>, as well as Interdisciplinary Honors<https://honors.uw.edu/reqs/>.
