I hope this email finds you well. My name is Krista Pylant, and I am the Marketing and Communications Specialist at the Penn State Department of Geography. I am reaching out to invite your department’s students to apply for an enriching opportunity: The Geography Education Networking Initiative for Underrepresented Scholars (GENIUS) workshop.

GENIUS is a transformative three-day workshop, scheduled for May 13-15, 2024, in State College, Pennsylvania. It is designed for rising third- and fourth-year students who identify as part of a racially underrepresented group. Our aim is to provide students with support and mentorship as they prepare to apply for graduate programs in geography.

Application Deadline January 31, 2024

What Does GENIUS Offer?

1. Mentorship: Students will receive guidance in preparing crucial application materials for graduate school, such as email introductions to potential advisers, a curriculum vitae, and a personal statement.
2. Networking: Attendees will connect with peers and established scholars from across the U.S. and Canada, building professional networks to support their academic and career aspirations.
3. Resource Identification: A focus on identifying funding opportunities to help alleviate the costs of graduate applications.
4. Hands-On Support: Direct interaction with Penn State Geography faculty and current graduate students to gain insights into the graduate school experience and application process.

Qualifications for Participation:

* Identify as a member of a traditionally underrepresented racial group (including but not limited to African American, Chicano/a and Latino/a, Native American, and Asian American)
* Intent to pursue graduate studies in geography.
* Availability to attend the workshop in State College, PA from May 13-15, 2024.

Support for Participants:

GENIUS offers travel support, hotel accommodations, and some meals during the workshop.

Application Details:

* Application Period: November 15 - January 31
* Required Materials: Name, Institution Email, and a 500-word statement of intent for graduate studies in geography.
