Dear Geography Students,

As you may know, the union representing our teaching assistants (TAs) and predoctoral instructors has been negotiating their employment contract with the University of Washington. While the University continues to negotiate in good faith and hopes that both parties can reach an agreement very soon, the union has informed us of a potential strike starting Tuesday, May 14. We are committed to the continuity of academic instruction to the greatest extent possible.

In the event that the leader of your class/lab/section is not in attendance, please make sure that all your assignments have been saved, including those submitted via Canvas, to your computer or cloud storage space. If you arrive at a discussion section, lab, or office hour and your TA is not present-or if your online course is inactive or inaccessible-please notify your instructor. If you are unable to connect with your instructor or if your instructor does not respond in a timely manner, please contact the Geography Advising Office at geogadv at uw.edu<mailto:geogadv at uw.edu>

For more information about the negotiation process, please visit the UW Labor Relations updates webpage<https://hr.uw.edu/labor/academic-and-student-unions/uaw-ase/ase-negotiation-updates>.

We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,
Michael Brown (he/him)
Professor & Interim Chair
Department of Geography
