It's no secret that homelessness is on the rise here in Seattle and around the country. Recent Point-in-Time counts<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/kcrha.org/data-overview/king-county-point-in-time-count/__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!lL7wqj36qpSoLcXkahyEATmkTjtMDDUfoT-B1E1Kr-w857VvmjWrWD6su3PkiprEvD04Zl0Ob_sLylVd5RkOkz0$> showed a 23% increase in homelessness in our county between 2022 and 2024. People of color, those with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are disporoportionately represented among those living homeless. Why is this the case, and what can be done about it?

In Homelessness is a Housing Problem<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/homelessnesshousingproblem.com/__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!lL7wqj36qpSoLcXkahyEATmkTjtMDDUfoT-B1E1Kr-w857VvmjWrWD6su3PkiprEvD04Zl0Ob_sLylVd73LW4tc$>, housing scholar (and UW faculty member!) Gregg Colburn<https://re.be.uw.edu/people/gregg-colburn/> and data journalist Clayton Aldern seek to explain the substantial variation in rates of homelessness apparent in cities across the United States. Do differing rates of poverty, substance use or mental illness, or "generous" social service systems explain the prevalence of homelessness around the country? Or is the answer much more simple?

Join Gregg Colburn for a discussion of this research, how we got here as a nation, and how we can do better in the future:
