The M.Ed. situates educators and community workers as change agents in understanding and dismantling inequitable systems, structures, policies, and practices across educational and community contexts. Our 3 M.Ed. concentrations are below.
CONCENTRATION: CRITICAL EDUCATIONAL CHANGE AND LEADERSHIP (CECL)
This concentration offers educators and community workers from across sectors the opportunity to build leadership skills for social change. Courses in this concentration focus on principles of collective liberation while centering on the wisdom and priorities of oppressed and marginalized communities. Students have taken learnings from this concentration to improve their current educational practices and begin new justice-oriented careers in higher education, community organizations and K-12 systems.
CONCENTRATION: ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES - endorsement for current K12 teachers (ESOL)
This concentration, designed for certified K-12 teachers, provides critical inquiry into second language acquisition and bilingual education. Foundational courses center on curriculum, instruction, and assessment for teaching English to speakers of other languages. Graduates of this concentration are eligible to be recommended for the Washington State Teaching Endorsement in ELL.
CONCENTRATION: LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FOR EDUCATORS (LEDE) (1.5 years vs. 1 year)
This concentration is designed for educators seeking the Residency Principal or Program Administrator certificate. Courses in this concentration focus on instructional leadership and educational justice with an emphasis on anti-racist leadership. In addition to the certificate, students may also opt to pursue the Master of Education degree. (This program starts in Winter, and if pursuing principalship, 3 years of teaching experience is required)

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN COMMUNITY HEALTH AND SOCIAL JUSTICE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  *   Promote and implement anti-racist policies and practices to shift complex systems
  *   Analyze root cause of health inequities that perpetuate structural injustices and racism
  *   Deploy social justice theories, practices and policies that shift systems of inequities in communities, and develop strategies to disrupt oppressive systems and injustice
  *   Create community-based, culturally relevant health programs and campaigns that improve health outcomes in local communities and abroad in various settings
  *   Work with communities to create sustainable practices to address health inequities
