Art and Social Change in South India
Bangalore, India
Summer 2025 (A-Term)
Interested in art and activism? Join our long-running program and learn how Indian activists, scholars and everyday change-makers use art to expand the frame of human rights and social justice. You'll be impressed by the artistic range of practitioners we'll meet, and better understand how social change can take place on the streets, in the judiciary, in the classroom, as well as on various performance stages. Our program zooms in on the arts and exposes students to Indian dance, music, theatre and artistic production. We'll learn how colonialism influenced centuries-old artistic traditions, and consider how globalization, gender, sexuality, caste, race and class are represented in art nowadays. Students will participate in performances as well as engage in numerous hands-on experiences with front-line activists and thinkers.

Mad Kings and Monuments: Identity, Human Rights, and Reckoning in Germany
Munich (and Berlin), Germany
Summer 2025 (A-Term)
With a focus on Munich, the Bavarian region of Germany, and Berlin, this program offers place-based historical exploration of social, political, racial, religious, and cultural dimensions of German nation-building before and after the Holocaust. Famous for its picturesque mountains and castles, Bavaria has also been a crucible for wrenching social change, and has fostered nationalist domestic policy and world-views ranging from “Mad” King Ludwig to the Third Reich. Students will learn about the philosophy and practice of eugenics within the German historical context, while touring the actual sites where the policies originated and were put into practice. The program will conclude with a week-long tour of Berlin, where local and national identity through memorials will be explored, contextualized, and compared to memorials dedicated to the victims of National Socialism in present-day Munich, Nürnberg, Berchtesgaden, and Dachau.

Building for Peace in the Wake of War
Ha Noi, Hue, Hoi An, Dong Ha, Viet Nam
Early Fall Start 2025
CHID will once again sponsor a well-established study abroad program led by Christoph Giebel (UW, Int'l. Studies/History) to explore the legacy of war and ongoing rebuilding efforts in Viet Nam. More than 45 years after the end of the war, areas of central Viet Nam, where much of the fiercest fighting occurred, still must deal with the war’s after-effects. Environmental, community health, and socio-economic challenges stubbornly remain and defy quick solutions. Students will learn how wars—so easily started—will have grave impacts for generations even after their formal end.

Land and Native Knowledge: Agroecology in the Andes and Amazon
Quito, Ecuador
Early Fall Start 2025
What are the strategies and practices that farmers in Ecuador are implementing to deal with the agri-food crisis and socioeconomic and climate change challenges? In this program we will focus on understanding agroecological (or permacultural) and traditional farming systems. Traditional agri-food systems based on agroecology claim a central role for campesino agriculture in food production (campo means field, or rural area, and ino derives from Latin as ‘ownership’ or ‘relationship to’; a campesino is someone who cultivates and has a sense of belonging to the land). Agro-ecology emphasizes autonomy, the ability to decide what to produce and how to do it. The demands of rural peoples based on food sovereignty are based on agroecology, on the recovery of food as a right and the promotion of food culture and social organization. This program aims to observe, describe, and analyze agri-food systems based on ancestral knowledge, agroecology and food sovereignty, as well as the resilience that these systems provide in the face of global and local challenges. The program will be based on field visits to different farmers in Andean and Amazonian locations in Ecuador to learn from their traditional farming practices and resilience strategies.

History, Memory, and Human Rights in Central Europe
Prague (plus Vienna, Krakow, Budapest, and Berlin), Czech Republic
Autumn 2025
Prague has a magical flair like no other: a medieval cultural capital located in the heart of Europe, yet for decades seemingly locked away behind the Iron Curtain. Relatively spared from natural disasters and war, Prague boasts magnificent architecture preserved from its distant past, and is the home to world class theatres (think Mozart), labyrinthine cobble-stoned streets (think Kafka), and tucked-away bars, gardens and cafe's where you can contemplate the meaning of it all. One of the things that makes Prague special is its contradictions: it's both big as well as cozy, it's rich as well as poor, both "Eastern" and "Western", quiet and wild, and really old yet unmistakably reconfigured by the communist regime (1948-1989) as well as the capitalist system that replaced it. The Prague Program, which is one of the oldest CHID study abroad programs at UW (since 1996), is all about immersing yourself in Prague and the Czech Republic, where we explore the dynamic historical, cultural and political life of Central Europe. We focus on key issues that resonate well beyond Central Europe: the tragedy of the Holocaust, the nature and impact of the communist system, the hopes and tensions of the European Union, and how coming to terms with the past is reflected in the cultural and art scene we witness today.

Environmental Paris: The Modern Invention of Nature
Paris, France
Autumn 2025
This program offers students a chance to explore this modern “invention of nature” from three different perspectives—historical-scientific, urban sustainability-public health, and literary-artistic. Each class will focus on a different segment of this trajectory, the late 18th/early 19th century, the later 19th century, and the early to mid-20th century. All three classes will include exploration of Paris’s urban-natural landscapes, its gardens, its museums, and its architecture, as well as literary and visual representations of the shifting imagination of nature. Classes take place at the American Church in Paris, in the very heart of Paris. Students stay with English-speaking families in Paris for the entire duration of the program. Excursions, city walks and research days will be scheduled during the week, leaving ample free time to explore the city and other sites in Europe during weekends.

Legacies of Empires: Power and Diversity in Rome, Vienna, and Budapest
Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Italy, Austria, Hungary
Winter 2026
The goal of this program is to show how this world of nation states, which we consider as obvious and relatively stable, is a very recent and fragile historical phenomenon. For many centuries, vast empires comprising diverse peoples ruled and determined their lives and their destinies. What is a nation? Is the European Union simply the stitched together scraps of failed empires? Many of the ideas, ideals, ideologies and policies of the Roman, Byzantine, Hapsburg, and Ottoman Empires are still relevant and often essential in order to understand the often contradictory and unresolved issues of today's world. This program examines the ongoing legacies of colonialism and imperialism in Europe and the contemporary world. How are the frameworks we use to understand racialized, excluded, and marginalized people born from those legacies? How are the legacies of colonization perpetuating inequality today? Can we navigate such inequity without perpetuating it ourselves? As we travel across Europe together, we will unpack these questions in a seminar-style, non-shaming learning community.

Tolerance, Identity, and Difference in Amsterdam (Spring Break)
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Winter 2026
Russell Shorto has called Amsterdam “the world’s most liberal city,” and indeed, the Netherlands is well known for its “tolerant” approaches to drug enforcement, legalized sex work, and gay rights. However, recent events have brought this self-congratulatory attitude into question. In debates over immigration and multiculturalism, public commentators from across the political spectrum have argued for the limits of tolerance and the need to defend Dutch national identity against intolerant views, especially those allegedly associated with Islam. Large segments of the Dutch populace—and prominent politicians—have expressed fear, revulsion, and anger towards Dutch Muslims, whether recent immigrants or the children or grandchildren of so-called “guest workers” from Morocco and Turkey who helped power the Netherlands’s economic recovery after World War II.
This program contextualizes these debates by exploring the concept of tolerance in narratives of Dutch national history and in contemporary debates about the place of religion, race, gender, and sexuality in Dutch identity. Together with partners in the Netherlands, we will explore Dutch ideas and practices of tolerance and reflect on how these historical legacies are mobilized in contemporary debates over national identity.
