Dear colleagues -
We are writing to share some exciting news from the University of Washington's Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences! We've recently launched a new, online Speech, Language and Hearing Foundations Certificate<https://www.pce.uw.edu/certificates/speech-language-hearing-foundations>, with our inaugural cohort starting this June 2025. Our 4-quarter program was developed for anyone with a bachelor's degree outside of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) who wants to acquire academic prerequisites for graduate study in speech-language pathology (SLP).
Clinical SLPs evaluate and treat individuals of all ages and backgrounds living with speech, language, hearing and swallowing impairments, and there is high demand for SLPs across practice settings. We are seeking applicants with a variety of undergraduate degrees and backgrounds and are reaching out to request your assistance in sharing program information with your students who may be interested in pursuing a clinical SLP career. Attached is an information sheet along with our website link above.
Our certificate curriculum was developed by our tenure- and teaching-track faculty, who will also be instructors for this program. It was thoughtfully developed in response to changing student needs, increase in educational expenses, advance in online pedagogy, and the critical need to increase access to our academic programs and the SLP profession. For individuals with non-CSD bachelor's degrees, and there are several "leveling" options available to acquire foundational prerequisites for graduate study in SLP, but not all leveling options are created equal. We believe high-quality and intentionally designed online programming from our institution will fill an important gap by providing students with access to a strong academic foundation at a reasonable cost, in terms of both time and expense.
In addition to its flexibility and accessible tuition rate, the UW leveling program stands apart from others in several ways: comprehensive academic content to meet master's program requirements, opportunities to develop connections with peers and UW faculty, access to 25+ guided clinical observation hours, regular advising support, and graduate school preparation content.
Thank you in advance for sharing information about our new program with potential students and don't hesitate to reach out to us with questions!
Best regards,
Adrian KC Lee, ScD
