We are excited to announce a program called Mobile Health Outreach (MHO), an interprofessional service-learning project that will bring together volunteers from various health sciences programs at the UW to provide free medical and social services to underserved communities, with the support and collaboration of Harborview Medical Center (affiliated with the University of Washington and King County). In its pilot phase, the MHO program will partner with the Low-Income Housing Institute to provide mobile-van based services to uninsured/underinsured community members living in tiny house villages in the Seattle area.



Interprofessional service-learning and meaningful student leadership are at the heart of the MHO project. We are looking for 2-3 health sciences students to join our MHO steering committee as we proceed with planning for this project, with the goal of launching our outreach work by fall 2022. We hope to find student leaders whose experience, training and expertise will complement and diversify our team. Please note, we are looking for a 6 to 12-month commitment in order to successfully plan and launch the MHO project. Because previously scheduled meetings are a cornerstone of this planning work, we ask students to apply for this role only if they are generally available to meet from 12-1 pm on Fridays. We anticipate this volunteer role to require 2-4 hours / week on average.



Roles and responsibilities:

  1.  Serve as full members of the MHO steering committee
  2.  Participate in MHO steering committee meetings, generally 12-1pm on Fridays
  3.  In collaboration with other members of the steering committee, develop and launch multiple aspects of the MHO pilot, including,
     *   Community partnership development
     *   Listening sessions/ understanding community members’ circumstances and needs
     *   Establishing/implementing standards for interprofessional education, with the support of CHSIE
     *   Developing student leadership and volunteer structure and scheduling
     *   Preceptor recruitment and scheduling
  4.  Student steering committee members may choose to continue involvement (including, for example, leadership of week-to-week operations of the clinic) once the MHO project is well-established; however, this is not a requirement. The main role of the steering committee student leads will be to help develop and launch the pilot.
  5.  Maintain the highest standards of professionalism, respect, and communication with other team members, volunteers, community partners and clients.



Qualifications:

  1.  UW health sciences student who will be enrolled for the period of July-December 2022, ideally beyond
  2.  Passion for service and commitment to addressing health and social disparities
  3.  Interest/ experience in interprofessional education and collaboration
  4.  Demonstrated excellence in teamwork and communication skills
  5.  Volunteer experience, ideally in an outreach or community setting
