[UDSM Leadership] Iodine Supplements

Hi team, there is something that I'd like to put on the radar of outreach managers regarding a potentially dangerous supply.

High dose iodine supplements were found at a recent outreach (shout out to Katy for recognizing the dangers!) and there was also another bottle found in the supply closet. These have now been discarded, but it's possible that they may exist at other outreach sites. High doses of iodine can be dangerous if taken improperly, as they can lead to both hyper and hypothyroidism. Long term high dose iodine supplementation has been associated with thyroid autoimmune disease and thyroid cancer risk as well. (These risks do not apply to low dose iodine supplementation such as iodized salt)

The ask - please double check any on-site supply stores for iodine supplements and let me know if found.

A consideration - if we receive supplement or medication donations, please send me a message to verify the need/safety prior to adding to our central supply.

Thanks!
Sri
