Hello,
There have been presentations in past years showing problems in reading Math
with various screen reader technology. Now that MathCAT is in Jaws and NVDA,
many problems have been solved. Apple have made improvements in their math
reading, but it still may be behind the MathCAT experience.
I would not consider the content inaccessible if the screen reading software
is not doing the job. We should loby Apple to improve the experience.
I think the Apple folks will be at CSUN, and I believe we will be talking
about this.
Best
George

Subject: [Athen] Reading math content with VoiceOver
I have some math exams a professor prepared using the Word equation editor.
I can read them fine with NVDA and JAWS. I particularly like the JAWS math
viewer.
My student however uses VoiceOver on the Mac and says the exams are not
accessible.
Two questions: can VoiceOver read math content? Can these exams be converted
to something VoiceOver could read?
Also if NVDA and JAWS can read something that VoiceOver cannot read, would
you consider it inaccessible?
Though I use Braille and could read the math content in Nemeth my student
doesn't know Braille so it's not a consideration here.
