Hello Biology Students,

We have updated our policy and information about BIOL399. Please read below or review the internships page on our website.
INTERNSHIP CREDIT IN BIOLOGY

Taking part in an Internship while at the University is a great way to enrich your education and prepare for graduate school or a career in the biological sciences. Many employers and graduate programs look very highly upon a student who has real world experience gained through an internship. Participating in an internship can also help you develop your networking skills and open a gateway to a paid position when the internship has ended.
Below is some helpful information to consider when registering for BIOL 399
Please direct any questions to bio-ins-svcs at uw.edu<mailto:bio-ins-svcs at uw.edu>.

1.
BIOL 399 credits are only open to current Biology majors.
2.
You can register between 2 and 12 credits of BIOL 399 in a given quarter. You will pay extra tuition if your BIOL 399 registration takes you above a total of 18 credits in a quarter.
3.
Tuition is per credit in summer, unless you are registered as a full-time student, in which case you pay a quarter’s tuition.

Steps to Register for BIOL 399:

1.
Before you decide to register for Biol 399, make sure you contact an advisor to determine how many of those credits can count towards your degree: bioladv at uw.edu<mailto:bioladv at uw.edu>
2.
Determine how many total hours you work in an internship.
*
One credit requires 30 hours of internship work (3 hours per week over 10 weeks).
*
Therefore, you can divide your total internship hours by 30 and find the maximum number of credits that you can request.
3.
You will need to submit an application for Biol 399<https://form.jotform.com/242704377574059> credit each quarter that you enroll in internship credits.
4.
You will need to submit evaluation forms at the end of every quarter you are registered for Biol 399. Evaluations can be submitted via Canvas or email to bio-ins-svcs at uw.edu<mailto:bio-ins-svcs at uw.edu>

Important Registration Information

You must request credit for your internship at the time you do the internship. You can spread credits out over multiple quarters, but you cannot receive credit during quarters where you are not completing internship activities.

Example: You do an internship throughout the academic year, but you need to request the credits in only two of those quarters. Here is an example where there are 300 total hours, for which 8 total credits could be requested, but you only request 7.

You could also request up to 5 in winter and 2 in spring, because by the end of winter you would have a total of 200 hours:
