OCTOBER 2024

CHAIR'S LETTER

Dear Friends of Biology,

Welcome to Autumn quarter! It is my pleasure to greet you at the start of this new academic year as the brand new chair of the Department of Biology. For those of you who are unfamiliar with me, my name is Marti Bosma and I am honored and excited to serve as the department’s chair...

FEATURED STORIES

New discoveries in mosquito mating may help the fight against malaria<https://discover.uw.edu/MTMxLUFRTy0yMjUAAAGWWhmeimScRpux_dpca4QPgSLzNTxv7eQJ-DP6nD0xCCkomqUAz3F6tGTf7hasEPkqFPlgJHM=>

Research led by Jeffrey Riffell, Biology Professor, and Saumya Gupta, Biology postdoctoral researcher, found that male mosquito vision is "activated" at the sound of female-specific wingbeats - a discovery that could form the basis of a “lure” in a new generation of mosquito traps to reduce the spread of malaria.

How do our sea-meadows grow?<https://discover.uw.edu/MTMxLUFRTy0yMjUAAAGWWhmeio7kEfdDGBp3-6r92z2BJO3TK1Yd_oY0gzrNwSeqm8CdM99QljZyGp9yn05QhVEh9c8=>
Jennifer Ruesink, Biology Professor, seeks to protect and restore the Washington state eelgrass meadows in a collaborative research project funded by the Washington Sea Grant.

Human-wildlife overlap expected to increase across more than half of Earth's land by 2070<https://discover.uw.edu/MTMxLUFRTy0yMjUAAAGWWhmeinf06CFBmcjbj-zmfvOp6m-eHQnA4yROZy43fvcy_8T_OPcDRYnXc96qL3shVj8bX_A=>

Briana Abrahms, Biology Assistant Professor, co-authored a collaborative study that found that the overlap between humans and animals will increase substantially across much of the planet in less than 50 years due to human population growth and climate change.
