We are excited to share details for our first colloquium speaker of the year! On Friday, Oct. 20, we will be joined by Dr. Pavithra Vasudevan<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/liberalarts.utexas.edu/aads/faculty/pv5654__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!iZdL2JdbLixIztU3xRPLDwV59gJLigrraLOhnFmz8jHDrh2aAVhlKA_oc2kv2exCXcrA7KCeQYY$> (University of Texas at Austin), who will present her talk titled, "Living archives of atmospheric racism." Please find the below abstract and attached poster for more details.

This colloquium will be in our usual room (Smith 304) from 3:30-4:30pm.

Abstract: For Black workers, whose lungs toiled to maintain life under the burden of toxic wastes, shortness of breath and diagnoses such as COPD are symptomatic of an underlying pathology: a racist world that perverts the essential matter sustaining life into a tool of systematic violence. In these excerpts from my book, A Toxic Alchemy, I examine the aluminum company's ongoing efforts to deny Black history, in collusion with state actors, biomedical practitioners and research scientists, as the production of "dead archives" that celebrate white mythologies of development as progress and further capitalism's death-drive. Black life stories are repeatedly dismissed as incidental and forgettable, or perversely, co-opted by the corporation to celebrate the history of industrial capitalism. In contrast, I consider the significance of knowledges that emerge from environmental justice struggles as "living archives" that refuse the premise of disposability and demand a reimagining of the world.
