Hello again Geographers,

Just before AUT 2024 registration begins tomorrow, we have one more special topics class to share with you all! Please find the complete list below and flyers attached, too:

1. GEOG 295 "Geographies of Everyday Life."<https://geography.washington.edu/courses/2024/autumn/geog/295/a> Explores the spaces, places and social relations of people's everyday life. Geographical relations shape where people live, work and play; as well as the streets they regularly move along and the buildings that mark their daily paths and routines. Focusing on geographies of everyday life also provides a way to trace connections between the local and broader processes, practices and relations of power, such as government policy and economic globalization. This class equips students with the tools to comprehend and analyze the socio-spatial context of everyday life in all its multiscalar complexities.
2. GEOG 395 B "Indigenous Literature and the Environment."<https://geography.washington.edu/courses/2024/autumn/geog/395/b> Engages with a variety of authors and literary forms, as well as critical perspectives including ecocriticism and Indigenous Environmental Studies. Examines how Indigenous ways of knowing the environment remain relevant and impactful today. A&H, SSc, DIV.
3. GEOG 495 A "Cli-Fi and Science Communication."<https://geography.washington.edu/courses/2024/autumn/geog/495/a> Climate Fiction, also known as "cli-fi," is a relatively new and rapidly expanding media movement in which creators imagine how our world is responding to the effects of climate change. This course will examine different forms of cli-fi media, critically evaluating them as a method of communicating climate science to a broader audience. We will also examine cli-fi media as socio-political artifacts in their own right, through which various actors seek to envision alternate futures, politics, and imaginaries. We will read and analyze numerous cli-fi artifacts and texts including fiction, film, critical geographic analysis, physical science research, urban planning documents, environmental policies, and more. Students will develop tools for cross-disciplinary thinking and analysis. Throughout the course, students will work on producing their own form of speculative storytelling, through which they will communicate key physical and social science research from the class.
